Sherlock Interview Identity Verification

Sherlock Identity Verification allows interviewers to verify a candidate’s identity before an interview.

Written by Gemma from Sherlock

The verification process can include:

  • Face liveness verification

  • A verification photo

  • Optional government-issued ID document verification

The completed verification information is displayed alongside the interview details for review.

Verification Options

Identity Verification

When Identity Verification is enabled, Sherlock sends the selected candidate an email asking them to complete verification before the interview.

The candidate must:

  1. Open the verification link.

  2. Complete a face liveness check.

  3. Take a verification photo.

  4. Submit the photo.

This process helps confirm that the candidate is a real person and provides a reference photo that can later be compared with their appearance during the interview.

ID Check

ID Check is an optional additional step.

When enabled, the candidate must first complete document verification using a government-issued identity document. After the document check is completed, the candidate continues with face liveness verification and photo capture.

The full flow is:

  1. Document verification

  2. Face liveness verification

  3. Verification photo capture

  4. Verification completion

Enabling Identity Verification

Identity Verification can currently be enabled when creating an interview from a connected calendar event.

The interviewer can:

  • Enable Identity Verification

  • Optionally enable ID Check

  • Select the candidate from the event attendees

  • Edit the candidate’s email address or name

  • Add a candidate manually when needed

Only one candidate is selected for verification for each interview.

The candidate’s email address is required because Sherlock uses it to send the verification link.

Candidate Email

After the interview is created, Sherlock sends the candidate an email titled:

Identity Verification Required

The email explains that identity verification is required before the interview and includes a unique verification link.

The candidate can complete verification using a device with a camera. The verification link is intended only for the selected candidate and expires after 48 hours.

Candidate Verification Experience

When the candidate opens the verification link, Sherlock checks whether the link is valid.

The candidate may see one of the following states:

  • Verification ready

  • Verification already completed

  • Invalid verification link

  • Expired verification link

  • Locked verification link

Face Liveness Check

Before taking the verification photo, the candidate completes a face liveness check.

The candidate selects a camera and follows the on-screen instructions. The check confirms that a live person is present rather than a static image or basic replay.

Once the face liveness check is completed successfully, the candidate can continue to photo capture.

Verification Photo

The candidate takes a clear photo using their camera.

Before submitting, they can:

  • Review the photo

  • Retake it

  • Download it

  • Upload it to complete verification

Candidates are advised to use good lighting and keep their face clearly visible.

Document Verification Experience

When ID Check is required, the candidate completes document verification before the face liveness step.

The candidate is guided through the identity document process and may need to provide:

  • An accepted identity document

  • A document photo

  • A selfie or additional identity evidence

After the document verification is approved, the candidate continues with face liveness verification and photo capture.

Verification Completion

For standard Identity Verification, the process is complete after the candidate finishes the face check and submits the verification photo.

For Identity Verification with ID Check, both the document verification and the verification photo process must be completed.

After completion, the candidate sees a confirmation message and can close the verification page.

Interviewer View

When Identity Verification is enabled, the interview details page includes a Candidate Identity Verification section.

Before completion, the status is shown as: Pending

After completion, the status is shown as: Verified

Depending on the selected verification options, the interviewer may be able to review:

  • Candidate verification photo

  • Verified email address

  • Verification date and time

  • Candidate IP address

  • Face comparison results

  • ID document verification status

  • Document and selfie images

  • Verification error details, when applicable

The verification photo can also be used as a reference for facial comparison with images collected during the interview.

Verification Statuses

The candidate verification process may involve several stages:

  • Verification email sent

  • Candidate verification pending

  • Document verification pending

  • Document verification processing

  • Face liveness pending

  • Photo submission pending

  • Verification failed

  • Verification expired

  • Verification complete

These statuses help the interviewer understand whether the candidate has completed the required steps before the interview.

Summary

Sherlock Identity Verification provides a pre-interview identity workflow that can combine:

  • Candidate email verification

  • Face liveness detection

  • Verification photo capture

  • Optional identity document verification

  • Post-verification review for interviewers

Its purpose is to help confirm that the person attending the interview matches the identity information submitted before the interview.
